MIAMI -- Investigators brought arson-sniffing dogs to the scene of a strip mall fire that destroyed five businesses in Little Havana over the weekend.

The fire is being called suspicious and the dogs were brought in from Orlando to help in the investigation.

"They can sniff out gasoline, if there was gas that was poured in there," said Miami fire spokesman Ignatius Carroll. "Even in the rubble where we can't smell it they will be able to determine if there's something strange and we can collect it and take it in for evidence."

The fire broke out Sunday at the strip mall on Southwest Eighth Street. Firefighters said the blaze was sparked in the attic of one of the stores and spread quickly.

Rumors of arson spread almost as quickly as the flames. Several other arson fires have happened in the area in recent months.

"I don't want to give my opinion on that (arson) but it's just the way that everything happened, the way the fire reacted. Who knows?" said Greg Maya, whose cigar business was destroyed in the blaze. "It's their job to go ahead and figure this out."

"We are determined to find this person or people who are doing this," Carroll said.

Fire marshals, ATF agents and members of Miami Fire Rescue are involved in the investigation.
